“Continue to be who and how you are, to astonish a mean world with your acts of kindness.” – Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou’s (1928-2014) early life was riddled with abuse and trauma. The effects were difficult, including years of being mute as a child. She credits the kindness of a teacher with helping her back to her words. She went on to become an award-winning author and civil rights activist, who has received more than fifty honorary doctorate degrees, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and has become the first Black woman to be depicted on a quarter. The kindness of one person set a spark in Angelou that would go on to change the world. Learn more at https://www.mayaangelou.com/

At Horizon, let’s remember that there are those among us, whether it be co-workers or patients, that are also facing difficult times. It doesn’t take much to “astonish a mean world with your acts of kindness.” A smile or a kind word can change a person’s whole day. Taking a moment to listen and make eye contact can make a big difference. Let’s “continue to be who and how [we] are,” and remember that kindness matters.
